Class Descriptions

Pre-Beginners: For the first time EVER, Kinsella Academy is offering a class to Tots ages 2-3.  We will have fun learning to clap and march to Irish music as well as learning the basic exercises for Irish Dance and the first step of the Irish Jig.  Children will have fun interacting with one another as well as with the one-on-one instruction of the teachers.  This is the perfect introduction to Irish Dance!

Beginners: This is the entry level for dancers who have no prior Irish dance experience. In this class, dancers will learn the basic steps of the jig and reel. The students will also learn about the importance of posture and form. As soon as beginners have mastered the jig and reel, they will be able to feis (compete) and take part in performances.

Advanced Beginners: Dancers at this level will learn more advanced jig, reel, and slipjig steps, the traditional hornpipe and treblejig and 3 handed team dances. Again, posture and form will be emphasized.

Novice: Novice dancers will further advance the complexity of the steps in their dances, including jig, reel and slipjig, the slow hornpipe, slow treblejig and additional team dances. Students will be encouraged to further their knowledge of form, posture and rhythm.

Prizewinner: Prizewinner classes are for dancers who have placed first in the following Novice dances: jig, reel, hornpipe, treble jig, slip jig (girls). These students are qualified to compete in the Midwest Regional Championships (Oireachtas). Class time will be used to perfect previously acquired skills and to further advance the dancer's understanding of rhythm. In addition, each dancer will learn a set dance (hard shoe) choreographed by his/her instructor.

Preliminary Championship/ Championship: These are the last two competitive levels of Irish dance in which the dancers' knowledge of rhythm and form are challenged by difficult steps. These dancers strive to recall at the Regional, National and World competitions.

Adults:  So you think the kids make it look easy.  Our adult class teaches the fundamentals of Irish Dance.  Come learn the art of Irish Dance while getting a great workout at the same time
